STEP SEVEN In this step, I pump up the colors wherever they need it, and I begin adding more detail to the eye, the bill, the wavy dark lines of pattern on the feathers, and the side pocket. (I work on the color enhancements first so that I can add the darker and lighter values over them.) I mix permanent green light, yellow ochre, and cadmium yellow light for a warmer yellowish green for the head. I add a light wash of yellow ochre on the side pockets and a light wash of violet by the tail. Then I apply a mix of yellow ochre, cadmium yellow light, and white to highlight the orange feathers. The warm, slightly yellow white on the duck is mixed with dabs of cadmium yellow light and yellow ochre. The darkest value is a mix of burnt umber, ultramarine blue, and a little violet.
